Proof Reading Tips

Part of our sample process involves asking you to proof read your own samples due to the amount of detail involved - for Invitations and Order of Services.

“But its your job, you do it all the time - so why would anything be wrong?” I hear you ask?
Every wedding is different. Whilst I may have the styling and finer details mastered - the nitty gritty ultimately comes down to you. YOU will know if the time is wrong, or you don’t want directions from THAT motorway junction because most of YOUR guests are coming from the other way, or you don’t want to invite kids to your day - so that needs to be added, and so on. Every wedding is different, so I can’t possibly know everything about yours specifically, but this is just one of the processes I implement that allows us to work together every step of the way to make sure they end up PERFECT. And, I’m also human, and as each template is done from scratch errors can occur, so it’s important for peace of mind on both parties to verify every detail.

As easy as proof reading may sound, it is so easy to miss things that are staring you in the face, and there are a few ways you can help to avoid this:

  1. Check multiple times but NOT straight after another. Take breaks in between or even leave it until the next day before checking again.

  2. Check printed copies, not on a screen. (Sometimes we email revisions if the alterations needed are only minor). It's harder to proof read on a screen. Even when you think you've picked up on everything, print it off and try again, usually more is picked up on!

  3. Have someone else check it too. They will likely pick up on errors that you may have missed.

  4. Have someone check it that already knows the details of the wedding and the venue, so that they can make sure that the fine details are correct.

  5. Have someone check it that DOESN’T already know the details of the day - someone neutral. Sometimes, if you already know what it is you're trying to say it will make sense to you, but it may not make sense to someone new to the information.

  6. Verify all the data detailed in the invites. Don't take it for granted that all the information such as phone numbers/postcodes/directions etc are correct. We take all that info from either you or google. It may be worth actually ringing the numbers/following the directions etc yourself to make sure everything does tally up and the info retrieved isn't out of date or been misinformed.

Once you have followed the steps and are confident your sample is perfect and ready to print, we ask you to sign it off along with an approval form. Explained in more detail on our previous blog.
